In my previous post, I mentioned that my buddy Janice from Singapore mailed me a box of local goodies. Yesterday I opened the Mee Rebus meal kit and cooked it for my gf and I. We both loved and enjoyed it tremendously. My only regret was that Janice only sent 1 box of it, because I did not request for this dish. As a matter of fact, I had COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN that Mee Rebus existed. Having lived in Shanghai for nearly 2 years without returning to Singapore, I had forgotten this childhood favourite that I had literally ate through mine and many Singaporeans growing years.
I couldn’t help but reminisce back to the Secondary school, Junior College, Polytechnic (Yes I went to all 3) and Police Headquarter days where I would faithfully order the noodle dish whenever it was available- usually only on a certain day of the week.

While ‘Hokkien Noodles’ aren’t readily available here, it didn’t stop me from making the dish. I used another variant of egg noodles with ‘tau pok’ and bean sprouts, paired with not ONE but TWO hard boiled eggs.
The sauce from the mealkit was surprisingly authentic. I’ve only had praises for Primataste mealkits so far.
Looking up Mee Rebus recipes on the net let me realized that the main ingredients that make up the sauce is something surprisingly common, and something that no one would expect from a Malay dish: Sweet Potatoes. In almost every variant of Mee Rebus recipes that I’ve came across had Mashed Sweet Potatoes mixed in a spice/curried sauce. I am going to try to make this from scratch at home soon.
